The Azerbaijan State Caspian Sea Shipping

Formation of the Caspian Sea Shipping dates back to May 21, 1858 when the Caucasus and Mercury Joint Stock Shipping Company was established by the order of Russian Senate.

Till 1992 the Caspian Sea Shipping was consisted of 17 shipping departments of Marine Ministry of USSR. After collapse of USSR 7 of 15 soviet republics inherited Marine of USSR. This legacy in Caspian belonged to Azerbaijan only.

1. Structure of the Caspian Sea Shipping

The Azerbaijan State Caspian Sea Shipping, the huge diversified company with vessels in Caspian basin, includes:

- marine;

- Khezerdenizgemitemiri Ship Repair Production Unit;

- Technical Service and Repair Base;

- Khezerdenizyol Sea Routes Basin Management;

- Khezerdenizlayihe Research Institute;

- Computing Center;

- trade, supply and agency organizations;

- Basic Electroradionavigation Chamber;

- Radiolocation Trainer Complex;

- CASPIAN Guest House;

- militarized protection team;

- educational institutions (sea academy, trade school, schools);

- ‘Yacht Club’ Sport Complex.

Marine includes 71 transport vessels and a water carter, 36 of which are ship-tankers transporting liquid cargo, 7 ferries, 2 RO-RO type universal ships, 26 ships transporting dry cargo. Total dead weight is 375.000 ton.

The marine’s 23 dry cargo ships carry out commercial voyages in Black and Mediterranean seas upon time-charter, the rest of vessels sail in Caspian Sea. The Shipping functions as a junction in TRACECA within Caspian. Railway carriages, motors and passenger ferries and tankers are used for cargo transportation in TransCaspian direction. Tanker marine of the Caspian Sea Shipping is the strongest in Caspian.

Eurasia corridor, which is the major cargo base for the Caspian Sea Shipping in Caspian, extends nearly 11-12.000 km from Lyanyungan Port, China, to Vienna, Austria. Cargo is transported via several countries by different transport types upon different legislations, customs and frontier procedures.

Transportations are realized by tankers of the Caspian Sea Shipping at Aktau-Absheron, Alaja-Absheron, Alaja-Baku, Okarem-Absheron, Okarem-Baku, Aktau-Baku and Turkmenbashy-Baku routes.

Oil terminal was launched in Sangachal to accelerate loading and unloading of tankers.

Khezerdenizyol was established in 1928 out of necessity for reconstruction of large-tonnage ships because of construction of ports, growth of cargo stream in the basin.

Khezerdenizyol operates in field of bottom deepening, installing and serving the navigation means for shipping security, construction of new sea routes, channels, wash of new territories.

Khezerdenizyol has carried out bottom deepening works in all ports of Caspian Sea. The bottom deepening marine of the department has taken part in construction of all ports and some bridges of Caspian Sea, also of Novotallinsk Port.

Khezerdenizgemitemiri Production Unit covers Paris Kommunasy, Zagfederasiya, Allahverdiyev Shipyard and Vano Strua Shipbuilding Yard building small-tonnage vessels.

Khezerdenizlayihe Research Institute develops designs for hydraulic and bank plants.

Over 95% of revenues of the Caspian Sea Shipping is provided by cargo transportation, while the rest by passenger transportation and other facilities.

Baku Sea Trade Port

Baku International Sea Trade Port was established in 1902.

On January 1, 1992 the port became independent.

Statute of Baku International Sea Trade Port was approved upon Decision 407 of November 28, 1994 of the Cabinet. In accordance with the statute, the port is the self-supporting and self-financing legal person.

The port operates 24 hours all the year long and employs about 800 peoples.

The port includes 5 terminals:

1. Main Cargo Terminal

2. Container Terminal

3. Ferry Terminal

4. Dubendi Oil Terminal

5. Passenger Terminal

Baku International Sea Trade Port includes Port Marine consisted of 20 vessels (tow boats, oil residue collecting ships, fire extinguishing ships, pilot boat, vessels taking slops and fecal waters, inshore boat, crane ship, houseboats, fuel-supply vessel).
