Creation of the State Railway of Azerbaijan dates back to January 20, 1880.
Baku-Sabunchu, the first railway in Azerbaijan, was designed only for the transportation of oil and extended to 20 kilometers.
The Baku-Tiflis railway extending to 550 kilometers was commissioned on May 8, 1883 and the Derbend-Bilajari railway extending to 231 kilometers in 1900.
The State Railway of Azerbaijan was one of the oldest iron highways of the former Soviet Union and the railwaymen of Azerbaijan overcame all the difficulties successfully during the Great Patriotic War. They supplied the Red Army with fuel and oil products and sent 1 million 300 thousand including 600 thousand cisterns load of fuel to the front.
The length of railway in Azerbaijan is 2944.3 kilometers including 2122 kilometers of operated roads.
1277,1 kilometers of the road or 60% of total length is equipped with electric.
The total volume of cargo transportations in frame of TRACECA was 7327,6 thousand tons.

Optic communication line is supposed to be built between Yalama (Russian frontier) and Astara (Iranian frontier) stations in frame of North-South Transport Corridor.
