Established in 1879 as result of merger of several oil refineries operating in the past in ‘Black City’ in Baku Azerneftyagh Oil Refinery was the leading enterprise in the oil industry during 129 years of its existence.

Formation of oil refining industry began with construction of small plants. Growth of oil production, composition and quality of Baku oil increased interest in oil refining and inspired the world industrialists to invest in this field. Since small refineries had elementary equipment and technologies, outstanding scholars of the time prepared permanent oil refining process and Nobel Plant was built of raw stills.

The production of lubricating oils from Absheron oils began a little late after the production of white oil (kerosene). Building the huge plant in Black City by use of new techs laid foundation of present Azerneftyagh Oil Refinery.

The technological process was based on oil distillates repeated refining, condensation and cooling principles. At the same time the distillates were refined by acid-alkali solution. The quality of lubricating oils produced in Azerbaijan hadn’t competitors in Europe countries.

Starting from 1925 the oil production in Azerbaijan began to increase and its refining required the construction of additional and modern technological units. The reconstruction works began on existing refining stills. In 1928 more than 2 millions tons of oil was refined in the refineries situated in Black City and compared with 1920 their industry power raised three times.

Azerneftyagh Oil Refinery due to application of modern technology was the first refinery handled the success. In 1929 the refining process on tube unit produced in the USA was put in action on this refinery at the first time on the post soviet area. And this provided the production of fuel from black oil. From total quantity of crude oil was received up to 3,5% the fuel.

In 1930-1937 there were held the large scale constructing and mounting works on the refinery, were put into operation 5 vacuum units of ALCO type, 6 thermo-cracking units and oil refining workshop working on the contact method. By this the refinery takes the leading place among the big refineries. In 1938 the Refinery parallel with refining 8 millions tons of crude oil produced more than 1 million ton of lubricating oils. The unit of selective oil refining by furfural was put into operation.

As a result of using various technical methods to provide the raise of plane gasoline during the war periods the process of high-octane fuel production was organized. Atmospheric refining units transferred to the wide fraction repeated refining system but thermo-cracking units were replaced by reforming systems.

As a result of achievement got in the field of using and application of new scheme of the aviation gasoline production some group of scientists and refinery experts got national rewards.

During 1941-1945 world war periods the development of the refinery endured standstill and as a whole worked on supplying battle-front with the combustive-lubricating materials. In 1942 labor collective of the Refinery was rewarded with Lenin Order. The Refinery many times was rewarded by Challenge Red Banner from State Defense Committee.

In 1948 for demonstration bravery in fulfillment of industrial mission and achievement of high economical indexes the Refinery was awarded the Red Flag Labor Order.

To provide the development of national agricultural economy production of autol and diesel oils was organized at the Refinery. Starting from 1954 there were carried out the works in the direction of enlargement the units used in oils refining and additionally put in action mixers, filters, mils for smashing the loam and control for them was automotives. At the same time these years the production of additives was used to provide improvement of oils quality. For these achievements parallel with scientists two experts of the Refinery were granted the title of State Reward Laureate.

When the quantity of wax in produced oils began to grow this made the necessity of using dewaxing technology in refining the crude oil meant for production of oils and for the first time in the Soviet Union production of more than 100.000 tons of transformer oil was provided.

When wise leader of Azerbaijani nation, national leader Heydar Aliyev began to govern the republic from 1969 the development of oil producing and oil refining industry got on a new level. In oil refining industry like in all areas of national economics occurred the turning and Azerneftyagh Oil Refinery started its second life. In 1970, the Oil Refining Industry Reconstruction Plan was adopted thanks to decisive policy of Heydar Aliyev and in 1981 the unit of preliminary oil refining ELOU-AVT-6 which annually refines 6 millions tons of oil was put into commission.

The new phase in improvement of production at Azerneftyagh Oil Refinery after Azerbaijan became independent is firmly linked to the name of great leader Heydar Aliyev.

The new oil strategy founded by him for prosperity of future generations provided for increase of oil production, fruitful and purposeful development of Caspian hydrocarbons, modernization of refining process and lifting its potential.

Setting the export of finished goods that is more useful than export of crude oil as priority, tradition of application of extra powers and progressive techs in the republic, including at Azerneftyagh Oil Refinery became important again.

In 1994 USA Petrofak, in 1995 South Korea Lucky Engineering companies launched two technology units ELOU-AVT-2 at the Refinery. These units lifted production at the enterprise, assured production of oil outputs meeting world standards and protection of environment.

Bitumen production unit Biturox, producing power of which is 250.000 ton, was launched to assure implementation of large-scale road construction and renovation works in the republic. The unit meets the need of the republic for bitumen and its export. This complex is quite ecologically clean production field.

Works are underway to implement new projects. According to the State Programme on Development of Fuel-Energy Complex of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2005-2015, it is scheduled to build hydrogen refining complex in the Refinery to produce fuel meeting European standards (EURO-2005), supply operating plants with chemically cleaned water, reprocess oil mud.

At present, the fields of the Refinery produce more than 20 various oil outputs such as lubricating oils, initial refining gasoline, diesel and motor fuel distillates, vacuum gas oil, bitumen, motor fuels, stove mazut.
