Azerbaijan recognised of Independence of the Republic of Latvia on 30th August, 1991.

Latvia recognised of Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 8th January, 1992.

The diplomatic relations between the two states were established on 11th January 1994.

The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Riga was opened in 2005. Tofiq Zulfuqarov is Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Latvia.

In 2006 Mihails Popkovs was appointed to Azerbaijan as the Ambassador.

Political relations:

Official visits of the heads of the states are intensified the development of the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia. During the visits bilateral agreements covering cooperation in different fields were signed.
Azerbaijan is interested in developing the high level political dialogue also to develop the effective cooperation between the legislative and executive branches of the two states.


International cooperation:

There is a good mutual cooperation tradition between the two states within such international organizations as UN, OSCE, NATO, EU etc.
Azerbaijan and Latvia also tightly cooperate within the frameworks of the Euro¬Atlantic Partnership Council, NATO's Partnership for Peace Program and the Individual Partnership Action Plan.

Inter-Parliamentary Relations:

4 May, 2005 Members of the Latvian Seymas Latvian-Azerbaijan inter- parliamentary working group visited Azerbaijan.
13 December, 2005. The Azerbaijan-Latvian inter-parliamentary working group was established in Milli Majlis.
 
2-4 June, 2006 Chairman of the Milli Majlis O.Asadov paid the visit to Latvia.
13 March, 2006 The delegation of the Latvian Seymas participated at the Second Congress of the World Azerbaijanis.
